Formed in 1991 in Boston, Massachusetts, by lead vocalist and guitarist Spider One (born Michael Cummings), the band initially started as a project called "Powerman" before adopting the name Powerman 5000. Their debut album, The Blood-Splat Rating System (1999), showcased their distinctive sound, combining aggressive guitar riffs with electronic beats and catchy hooks. The band's lineup during this period included Spider One's brother, Rob Zombie, as well as members Adam 12 (guitar), M.33 (bass), and Tim Earls (drums).

Powerman 5000 gained significant attention with their 1999 album Tonight the Stars Revolt!, which included hit singles like "When Worlds Collide" and "Nobody's Real." These tracks highlighted the band's ability to fuse hard rock with futuristic, sci-fi themes, resonating with fans of both alternative metal and industrial rock. Despite experiencing several lineup changes over the years and evolving their sound, Powerman 5000 has maintained a consistent presence in the rock music scene. The band’s energetic live performances and distinctive blend of genres have cemented their place in the alternative metal genre, continuing to attract new fans while retaining their core audience.
